As a 10x fitness coach I’m often asked things such as…….

“What’s the best way to lose 2 stone?”

“How do I get bigger arms?”

“I really want to run a marathon, where do I start?!”

“I’m 5ft 7 tall and I’d like to be 6ft, is this possible?!”

Ummmm, sorry pal, unfortunately I can’t help you with that last one!

Seriously though everyone has their own opinion on what method works best to reach a specific goal and I respect that, however my honest opinion is that there isn’t just one single way to achieve the results you desire. In fact I believe that it’s important to treat each and every person as an individual and to understand that their mental and physical responses will vary.

The saying that I often use when chatting to clients is ‘the devil is in the detail’. Planning, phasing and recording your training and nutrition in such a way as to get the most out of your mind and body is super important. But before you really get in to those finer details I want you to consider these 5 simple pieces of advice when embarking on your fitness journey.

Seek the professional

That’s why we’re here! When starting out on a fitness journey it can be a minefield of conflicting information on the internet or friends telling you what’s best. Simple answer…….find a quality, highly recommended coach who will advise you on the right course of action to take, focus your efforts and support you every step of the way.

Make it fun

Well it goes without saying! If you’re training on a daily/weekly basis then take part in something you’re going to get excited about and will want to do again. Of course it has to be effective in terms of your goals and sessions can be tough but that’s all part of the process when progressing. Also a good coach will adapt your sessions to mentally stimulate and bring out the most positive response from you.

Surround yourself with equally crazy people

Get yourself involved with training partners or groups that are there to support you and reinforce the changes you’re trying to make to your lifestyle. You may take inspiration from them, likewise they may take inspiration from you, either way the positive feedback as a result of being part of a fitness community is a guaranteed recipe for success!

Get the balance right

It turns out too much of a good thing can be bad……….well sort of!  Overtraining or being too strict with your nutrition over a long period of time can actually have a detrimental effect on your physical and mental well-being. In order to avoid this ensure that you have days off from training and allow a little flexibility with your nutrition. Go for walks, meditate, spend time with the family and eat a chocolate brownie (occasionally!) However you strike the balance, give yourself the opportunity to see the bigger picture and allow yourself to appreciate the positive changes you are making to your life.

Stick to the plan

Now this piece of advice may seem simple but in reality is actually pretty tough! Why you ask? As is life there are good days and bad days, ups and downs as well as reasons to quit. It’s important to rise above any of the negatives and remind yourself of the real reason why you set out on this journey in the first place. Stick to the plan, remain consistent and keep going no matter how tough it may seem and you’ll get there!
